Training in Audenshaw

The Manchester-area venue is Fairfield Golf Club on Kings Road in Audenshaw, M34 5FA. Use the Audenshaw address when planning your journey; this is a separate destination from Manchester city centre. The course takes place in the club’s hired meeting facilities, and no golf membership is required.

The training is useful for someone responsible for portable equipment at a workplace, or a tradesperson adding inspection and testing to their skills. You work through appliance checks and readings in a classroom setting, then consider how the same process applies to the equipment you will encounter at work.

Learners practising PAT testing with a tutor

What you will learn

Follow the inspection and testing process, from identifying an appliance to recording the result.

View Manchester dates

Electrical safety

Recognise common electrical hazards and understand how inspection and testing fit into the maintenance of workplace equipment. Learn the safe working procedures to follow before connecting a tester.

Appliance types

Understand Class I and Class II equipment and why different appliances need different checks. Consider everyday items such as office equipment, power tools and extension leads.

Visual inspection

Examine plugs, fuses, cables and appliance casings for damage or other concerns. Learn why this inspection matters: some faults cannot be identified from a tester reading alone.

Using a PAT tester

Connect equipment correctly and select appropriate tests. Work through earth continuity, insulation resistance, leakage and other relevant checks, with demonstrations and guided practice.

Understanding results

Interpret test readings, make pass or fail decisions and recognise when further action is needed. Practise linking the electrical test result with what you found during the visual inspection.

Records and retest intervals

Record your findings and label tested equipment. Consider how an appliance is used and its environment when deciding on inspection and testing intervals, rather than assuming every item needs the same schedule.

A PAT tester connected to a kettle during practical work

Practical work with real equipment

Your instructor demonstrates the procedures, then guides you as you carry out inspections, use the tester and record your findings. You can ask questions while working through each step and build familiarity with the equipment during the day.

PAT testers are provided for classroom practice, so you do not need to buy a machine before attending. If you already own one and would like to bring it, contact the course team in advance.

How the training day works

Explanation, guided practice and a chance to show what you have learned.

  1. Learn the process

Work through appliance types, visual inspection and safe testing procedures with your instructor.

  2. Practise with equipment

Use a PAT tester on real appliances, interpret the readings and record your findings. Ask questions as you practise.

  3. Complete the assessment

Demonstrate the inspection and testing process in a practical assessment, then complete a short knowledge check.

Do you need City & Guilds to PAT test?

NoUK law doesn’t require City & Guilds, or any named qualification, to carry out PAT testing.

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require the person doing the work to be competent: the knowledge, training and experience the task needs. HSE’s guidance asks for exactly that, appropriate training and competence. It doesn’t name a qualification.

This course gives you that training: hands-on practice on real appliances, a supervised practical assessment, and a certificate as evidence of the training you’ve completed.

Some employers, clients or contracts still ask for a named qualification. If yours does, call us free on 0808 164 2780 before you book.

Assessment and your certificate

The day includes a supervised practical assessment and a short multiple-choice knowledge check. You demonstrate safe working, correct use of the testing equipment and an understanding of the results. The practical sessions give you time to develop these skills before assessment.

Your digital Skills Training Group PAT testing certificate is emailed within one working day of passing. The course content follows the IET Code of Practice for in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment. Your certificate records the training and assessment you completed; if an employer or customer requires a specific qualification, check that requirement with the team before booking.

PAT testing with Pat!

We (6 individuals) had Pat as our trainer for the PAT testing course and it was a great experience to learn from someone practical and with enormous experienced in the field! He kept everyone engaged during the theory and practical part of it. Everyone in the room seemed to have enjoyed partaking in the course and left happy and confident in their abilities. The course conducted by him covered not only the theory and practical use of the PAT tester but also tips on conducting a PAT test as a self employed individual. Would absolutely recommend to anyone interested in this field. Worth every penny!

PAT Testing

Prior to attending the course everything was well communicated with me. When I arrived the assessor had everything set up ready to go so we could make a prompt start to the day. There was no time wasted and all key points identified. Although formal assessment took place throughout the day, it didn’t feel pressured. I would definitely use this company again and would definitely recommend the assessor I had.

Attending from Manchester

Is this a Manchester city-centre course?

The venue is in Audenshaw, at Fairfield Golf Club, M34 5FA. Check the full journey to the club before choosing a date, especially if you arrive at a central Manchester station.

Do I need to be a golf-club member?

No. The PAT course uses meeting facilities at the club. Your course booking is separate from golf membership or use of the course.

Training and your certificate

Do I need to be an electrician or have previous experience?

No. There are no previous electrical qualifications or experience required. The course starts with the basics, then moves into demonstrations and guided practice. It suits maintenance and facilities staff, landlords, property managers, tradespeople and people learning PAT testing for the first time.

I have not studied for years. Will I be able to keep up?

The course is designed for beginners. Your instructor explains the process, demonstrates it and gives you time to practise before assessment. You can ask questions as you go. If you need additional learning support, tell the team before booking so they can discuss your requirements.

Speak to the course team: 0808 164 2780
Will I actually test appliances, or is it mainly classroom theory?

You will carry out practical inspections and tests yourself. The instructor demonstrates the process, then guides you as you use a tester, interpret readings and record results. The course combines this practical work with the knowledge needed to understand what you are testing and why.

Do I need to buy or bring a PAT tester?

No tester purchase is needed for classroom training: equipment is supplied for the practical session. If you already own a tester and want to use it, contact the team in advance with the make and model. For live online training, you must have your own PAT tester before attending.

Is there an exam, and what will I have to do?

Assessment includes a supervised practical exercise and a short multiple-choice knowledge check. You demonstrate safe inspection and testing, correct use of the tester and an understanding of the results. The practical work during the course gives you an opportunity to develop these skills before assessment.

What happens if I do not pass?

Free reassessment is available if you do not pass. The course also carries a money-back guarantee if you cannot meet the required assessment standard. Your instructor provides guidance during the course; contact the team to arrange reassessment or discuss a guarantee claim.

Speak to the course team: 0808 164 2780
When and how will I receive my certificate?

Your digital certificate is emailed within one working day of successfully completing the course and assessment. Check that your learner name and email address are correct when booking. If it has not arrived after that time, check your spam folder and contact the team.

Speak to the course team: 0808 164 2780
Who issues the certificate, and is it a City & Guilds qualification?

Successful learners receive a Skills Training Group PAT testing certificate recording their training and assessment. This is a provider-issued training certificate, not a regulated City & Guilds qualification. The content follows the IET Code of Practice. If an employer or customer specifies a particular qualification, check that requirement before booking.

Will my employer, customers or insurer accept the certificate?

It provides evidence of the PAT training and assessment you have completed. Acceptance depends on the organisation and the work involved, so we cannot promise that it meets every contract or insurance condition. Share the course and certificate details with them before booking if they have a specific requirement.

Can I test workplace equipment or start offering PAT testing afterwards?

The course teaches and assesses portable appliance inspection and testing for workplace use or a PAT testing service. You still need suitable testing equipment and must work within your knowledge and experience. It does not qualify you for fixed-wiring or electrical installation work. Equipment, insurance and business arrangements are separate from the course.

Does the certificate expire or need renewing every year?

The certificate has no fixed expiry date. We recommend refresher training every three years to keep your knowledge current. An employer or client may set its own refresher requirement. This is separate from how often individual appliances should be inspected or tested.

Can you help with access, language or learning requirements?

Please tell the team what you need before booking. They can discuss the course, practical assessment and venue arrangements with you. This is especially useful if you need physical access arrangements, learning support, or help understanding the teaching and assessment language.

Speak to the course team: 0808 164 2780

Prices and booking

What is the total price, including VAT?

Classroom training is £234 including VAT (£195 excluding VAT) per person. Live online training is £174 including VAT (£145 excluding VAT). The displayed course price includes training, assessment and your certificate after passing. Classroom testing equipment is provided for use during the course.

Are the tester and IET book included to take home?

The classroom price covers use of the training equipment, not a PAT tester to keep. A copy of the IET Code of Practice is available to use during classroom training; your own take-home copy is a separate purchase. You do not need to buy a tester simply to attend the classroom course.

Can my employer book and pay? Will we receive a VAT invoice?

Yes. The booking service supports booking for yourself or for one or more colleagues. A VAT invoice is sent separately after booking; weekend bookings may need to wait until Monday. If your organisation needs a purchase order or payment on account, ask the team before booking rather than assuming credit terms are available.

Speak to the course team: 0808 164 2780
Can I pay a deposit or spread the cost?

PAT course bookings require full payment when you book. Deposits and instalment plans are not available. If your employer has a separate purchasing process, contact the team before booking to discuss what is needed.

Speak to the course team: 0808 164 2780
What happens after I book?

After a completed booking, the booking service sends confirmation and joining instructions by email, normally within ten minutes. Check your spam folder if they do not arrive, then contact the team with your booking details. Read the joining instructions for your confirmed venue, attendance time and anything you need to bring.

Can I move to a different course date?

Date changes may be possible, but they are not automatic. The published short-course terms set a £50 administration charge, with one change permitted at the provider’s discretion. Send the request in writing as early as possible so availability and the applicable charge can be checked.

Read the booking terms
What if I cancel or cannot attend on the day?

Outside applicable statutory cancellation rights, a £50 administration fee applies. If we resell your cancelled PAT course place, we refund the amount you paid minus that £50 fee. If your place is not resold, you may not receive a refund, including for cancellations fewer than 22 days before the course registration date. Non-attendance is normally non-refundable. No administration fee applies to a valid statutory cancellation. Contact the team promptly and read the full terms for your circumstances.

Read the booking terms
What if you cannot run my booked course?

If we cannot provide the course on the scheduled date, the booking terms provide for a refund for the course we cannot supply. Contact the team about your booking and refer to the cancellation provisions in the terms.

Read the booking terms
Can you train several colleagues together or come to our workplace?

Yes. You can enquire about places together on a public course or an in-house course for up to 12 learners. Send your location, group size and preferred dates to the team for arrangements and a quote. Ask about any applicable group discount before booking.
