If you manage appliances across an office, community building or workshop, the day gives you a practical way to organise checks and record what you find. It also suits someone taking on testing duties for the first time: you can handle the equipment before deciding what to buy for your own work.

Follow the inspection and testing process, from identifying an appliance to recording the result.
Recognise common electrical hazards and understand how inspection and testing fit into the maintenance of workplace equipment. Learn the safe working procedures to follow before connecting a tester.
Understand Class I and Class II equipment and why different appliances need different checks. Consider everyday items such as office equipment, power tools and extension leads.
Examine plugs, fuses, cables and appliance casings for damage or other concerns. Learn why this inspection matters: some faults cannot be identified from a tester reading alone.
Connect equipment correctly and select appropriate tests. Work through earth continuity, insulation resistance, leakage and other relevant checks, with demonstrations and guided practice.
Interpret test readings, make pass or fail decisions and recognise when further action is needed. Practise linking the electrical test result with what you found during the visual inspection.
Record your findings and label tested equipment. Consider how an appliance is used and its environment when deciding on inspection and testing intervals, rather than assuming every item needs the same schedule.

Your instructor demonstrates the procedures, then guides you as you carry out inspections, use the tester and record your findings. You can ask questions while working through each step and build familiarity with the equipment during the day.
PAT testers are provided for classroom practice, so you do not need to buy a machine before attending. If you already own one and would like to bring it, contact the course team in advance.
Explanation, guided practice and a chance to show what you have learned.
Work through appliance types, visual inspection and safe testing procedures with your instructor.
Use a PAT tester on real appliances, interpret the readings and record your findings. Ask questions as you practise.
Demonstrate the inspection and testing process in a practical assessment, then complete a short knowledge check.

Inspecting a steam ironNoUK law doesn’t require City & Guilds, or any named qualification, to carry out PAT testing.
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require the person doing the work to be competent: the knowledge, training and experience the task needs. HSE’s guidance asks for exactly that, appropriate training and competence. It doesn’t name a qualification.
This course gives you that training: hands-on practice on real appliances, a supervised practical assessment, and a certificate as evidence of the training you’ve completed.
Some employers, clients or contracts still ask for a named qualification. If yours does, call us free on 0808 164 2780 before you book.

We (6 individuals) had Pat as our trainer for the PAT testing course and it was a great experience to learn from someone practical and with enormous experienced in the field! He kept everyone engaged during the theory and practical part of it. Everyone in the room seemed to have enjoyed partaking in the course and left happy and confident in their abilities. The course conducted by him covered not only the theory and practical use of the PAT tester but also tips on conducting a PAT test as a self employed individual. Would absolutely recommend to anyone interested in this field. Worth every penny!
Pat Hutton was absolutely brilliant in his delivery and knowledge throughout the course. Would recommend any of my colleagues or clients to this centre for a PAT testing course.

Very entertaining and educational trainer Pat Hutton did a great job of a tough subject
Wonderful explanations. Questions were regularly answered. The coach Mr. Pat Hutton was really nice!
Prior to attending the course everything was well communicated with me. When I arrived the assessor had everything set up ready to go so we could make a prompt start to the day. There was no time wasted and all key points identified. Although formal assessment took place throughout the day, it didn’t feel pressured. I would definitely use this company again and would definitely recommend the assessor I had.

Speak to the course team: 0808 164 2780Successful learners receive a Skills Training Group PAT testing certificate recording their training and assessment. This is a provider-issued training certificate, not a regulated City & Guilds qualification. The content follows the IET Code of Practice. If an employer or customer specifies a particular qualification, check that requirement before booking.
It provides evidence of the PAT training and assessment you have completed. Acceptance depends on the organisation and the work involved, so we cannot promise that it meets every contract or insurance condition. Share the course and certificate details with them before booking if they have a specific requirement.
The course teaches and assesses portable appliance inspection and testing for workplace use or a PAT testing service. You still need suitable testing equipment and must work within your knowledge and experience. It does not qualify you for fixed-wiring or electrical installation work. Equipment, insurance and business arrangements are separate from the course.
The certificate has no fixed expiry date. We recommend refresher training every three years to keep your knowledge current. An employer or client may set its own refresher requirement. This is separate from how often individual appliances should be inspected or tested.
Please tell the team what you need before booking. They can discuss the course, practical assessment and venue arrangements with you. This is especially useful if you need physical access arrangements, learning support, or help understanding the teaching and assessment language.
